40 WINDOORS TO AΘENS – A Post Graffiti Exhibition

FEBRUARY 15th – 25th  @ ΤΗΕ ΒΟΧ(12 Dorylaiou str., Mavili Square)

OPENING: February 15th @ 20.00

Curator: TARTA ROSS

Organized by: ΤΗΕ ΒΟΧ

Eleven graffiti artists from Greece and another 5 European countries «borrow» the frames and the space of ΤΗΕ ΒΟΧ to present their own artistic statement regarding  what is graffiti and whether it can be confined to a closed space or the predefined dimensions of a picture frame. The key star in all the works will be the city of Athens.

In the exhibition we shall be hosting 40 original works of photography, design and video art by the following artists :

Rachid Omick Bulbien (France )        Bram Van Meervelde ( Belgium)

Renate Klijnstra (Netherlands)           Britte Van Meurs (Netherlands)

Constantinos Pantoflas (Greece)     U.Gatzmann (Spain)

K.161 (Greece)                       Oliver Salvesen (Denmark)

Tarta Ross (Greece)                  Senor (Greece)

Death Vallee (France)

The common element in all artists’ approach is described in the following introduction by exhibition curator, TARTA ROSS, who herein encapsulates the philosophy of the whole project.

«I can’t see graffiti as something separate from Athens.

It lives on its heartbeat. It also beats that heartbeat.

During these last years, the city of Athens has evolved into one of the graffiti capitals of the world, attracting artists and researchers of the graffiti phenomenon from all over the world.

Graffiti is not for sale- unlike most other things in this country. Its very practice and distribution makes it an enemy to any kind of confinement, on a level previously unseen- compared to the standards of modern art.

It is born, draws breath and gets inspired by the streets.

When it is full, it leads its artists to search for new pathways since an integral part of the Graffiti philosophy is to always look for that next step.

Eleven artists with many years of experience in the field of artistic intervention in public space, accept today the challenge of allowing you to know them personally. They reverse the rules by experimenting on the possible changes of Graffiti when confined in the squared limits of a frame, in a closed space.

With the streets of Athens as a common ground, we attempt to approach a contemporary erratic art form through an alternative dimension.

Through 40 frames of 40x 60 cm, Graffiti transforms itself, settling under the roof of THE BOX and its artists unravel the hidden side of the double identity.

For Athens, for you, for me.
